Tuesday Ratings: CBS Better Off Than Everyone Else

A good Day 2 showing for The Sing-Off and a finale for So You Think You Can Dance couldn’t keep CBS from overpowering the competition. The NCIS combo did its thing and gave the network wins in both the viewers and the demos.

8pm

• NCIS (20.6 million, 4.3/13 in 18-49) kicked off the night with 20.6 million.
• The Sing-Off (6.9 million, 2.6/7) actually saw improvement in the demos since Monday.
• A repeat airing of A Charlie Brown Christmas* (2.3/7) entertained 6.6 million.
• So You Think You Can Dance (6.3 million, 2.3/7) did the same as last week.
• The Vampire Diaries* (0.6/2) recapped 1.3 million.

• Cake Boss (TLC, 9pm):  “The crew makes a holiday-themed cake for a drag queen.” The holiday? Cher’s birthday.
• Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Food, 10pm):  “Guy Fieri visits North Pole, Alaska, for a taste of local Christmas favorites, including holiday ham with wild Alaskan cranberries; Reindeer hoagies; and “Santa” burgers.” For this trip, Fieri will be joined by a special guest: The Grinch.

Tuesday Ratings: CBS Breaks 13-Year-Old Record

What do you get when House is a repeat and DWTS is gone? Another stellar evening for CBS. Despite a two-hour Biggest Loser finale, the Eye network had its best Tuesday viewership since 1995. Meanwhile, a strong night of reality helped NBC tie CBS in the demos.

8pm

• NCIS (19.9 million, 3.9/11 in 18-49) had its largest audience in its six-year history.
• Approximately 11.7 million watched Michelle Aguilar win The Biggest Loser: Families (4.5/12).
• ABC‘s Charlie Brown Christmas (2.9/8) kept 8.3 million entertained.
• House* (6.4 million, 2.4/7) lost 7.5 million.
• 90210* (1.1 million, 0.5/1) was down a smidge.

• A Charlie Brown Christmas (ABC, 8pm):  “The gang mounts a holiday pageant as Charlie Brown bemoans Yuletide commercialism.” Sorry, Charlie. Not much has changed since 1965.
• Boston Legal (ABC, 9pm):  Series finale. “Financial problems may force Crane Poole & Schmidt to be put up for sale.” If the economy keeps going the way it’s going, that might not be the only thing ABC has up for sale.
• Two and a Half Men (CBS, 9pm):  “Alan considers early retirement when Evelyn offers to foot the bill for Jake’s college education.” After looking at his latest 401K statement, he then realizes that retirement won’t come anytime soon.
• The Hills (MTV, 10pm):  “Whitney interviews for a job in New York City.” Top resume skill: Able to effectively communicate in short sentences.

Shrek the Halls With a Big Green Ogre

Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la! Not only will Shrek the Third be coming to DVD soon (November 13), but ABC will be airing a Christmas special with the loveable green guy and his band of kooky friends. I don’t know how well it will hold up to classic fan favorites like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman or A Charlie Brown Christmas, but I’m all for a new Christmas special that isn’t another sequel to Frosty. Shrek the Halls will air on November 28th at 8:00 p.m. and will no doubt thrill kids with the animation and voice talents of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas. The ogre’s humbug ways are challenged by his family and friends (even the Gingerbread Man of “Not my gumdrop buttons!” infamy is on hand) and you can bet the gang will make the holidays truly special. Because that’s how all Christmas specials end, right? Now I’d like to see Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas return to television—you can keep your Frosty Returns and Frosty’s Winter Wonderland—bring on the jug band!
